It’s Never Too Late: A Dental Story from Sunrise, Florida

Our lives are busy, we have so much on our plates…

Things fall through the cracks even if they have been on the mental to do list for months, even years…

Sometimes some actions can pile up, or become something that feels shameful because it’s been so delayed, so past when we were “supposed to do it”.

So it stays in our mind yet taking action always feels out of reach and the shame grows.

Does this sound familiar?

If so, this doesn’t mean that you have a unique issue or that something is wrong with you.

This happens to so many of us, me, my patients included and I want to tell you a secret.

The shame is lying to you.

I want to share a story about one of my patients who was feeling exactly like this about booking her dental appointment, and hopefully it will resonate with you and help you move past the shame if that is where you are.

Step into Maya’s web of lists

Maya is a mom of 3 adorable kids and works a full time job.

For years, she had dentist appointment in the back of her mind, but somehow, week by week this to do list item kept getting pushed to next week, next month.

Time passed. And with every year that went by, the idea of returning felt heavier.

Maya noticed her teeth were getting yellower and didn’t feel as clean and healthy as before but it didn’t feel urgent enough for her to make the appointment.

The day Maya decided to listen

One day, her son came back from school where he had been learning about teeth and asked why her teeth were that color.

She didn’t know what to say… but felt a sadness inside about not taking care of herself.

Something inside her said “just do it already”.

Maya quickly searched online for a dentist near me and came across our dental office in Sunrise, Florida.

She dialed to make an appointment as thoughts raced in her head as it rang… It’s going to be complicated. How will I make it work with my schedule?

The voice on the other line broke her thoughts “Hello, this is Designing Beautiful Smiles.”

In less than 5 minutes, her appointment was booked and the task was out of the way.

A small victory. It felt good to check that off.

A different experience than expected

On the day of the appointment the voices came back as she drove.

Will I be judged because it’s been so long? Will I need a lot of work? Will this be uncomfortable?

These questions are incredibly common, especially for patients who have been away from dental care for years. Fear has a way of growing in silence.

The moment Maya stepped into our office, something shifted.

She was greeted warmly by our team, and slowly, the tension she carried with her began to soften. What she experienced next was the opposite of what she had feared.

No judgment. Questions on why it had been so long. Or shame at the state of her teeth.

She shared the story with me in the chair and was surprised to hear “You should be proud of yourself for coming in. It’s never to late”.

When life gets in the way of dental care

In Maya’s case, it had been 3 years since her last cleaning.

We understand how hard it can be to return after a long absence. That is why our approach is centered on compassion and meeting patients where they are.

There is no shame in starting again.
We celebrate the actions you do take to care for yourself, and are here to encourage you.

A reminder for all of us

A year later, Maya came back for her next cleaning and shared how her last visit had impacted her.

She was so surprised that she felt so listened to and encouraged to care for herself. It made booking the next appointment, and other appointments easier.

Caring for ourselves and tending to our lives is a life long journey.

Whether it has been months or many years since your last visit, you deserve care that feels supportive, respectful, and kind.

And you deserve that kindness to yourself too.
