From Fear to Trust: A Dental Anxiety Story in Sunrise, Florida

Coming to the dentist is a scary and anxiety inducing experience for many people.

At our dental office in Sunrise, Florida, I meet many patients who feel nervous, hesitant, or anxious about sitting in the dental chair.

Some have postponed care for years. Others arrive with tight shoulders, shallow breaths, and reluctance to experience pain or discomfort.

We understand that dental visits can be daunting.

Instead of telling you to not be scared, I want to invite you to come with your fear, your anxieties and know that I will do my very best to take care of you and help you feel safe, listened to and cared for while in our office.

I want to share the story of one of our patients, Tom and how he came to our office scared.

Tom’s story

Tom’s first appointment with us began with fear and uncertainty.

He had visited multiple dentists before and his experiences were usually uncomfortable and he felt overwhelmed.

This kind of fear is more common than most realize, especially for people who had extensive dental treatments as children.

It can quietly prevent people from seeking the care they need, even when discomfort or concerns begin to surface.

Over time, avoidance can turn small issues into bigger ones, reinforcing the cycle of fear.

Tom, like many patients who searched for a dentist near me every couple of months with both obligation and hesitation, wished he could just skip the dentist forever.

A glimmer of possibility

Tom’s path took an unexpected turn the first time he visited our dental office in Sunrise, Florida.

He came across our office on social media when he saw one of our testimonies where patients were sharing their positive experiences at the office and smiling with the dentist.

How are patients willingly doing this with their dentist?

He decided to give us a call and book an appointment.

He had a tiny bit of hope that this time could be different.

An unexpected experience

When Tom stepped into our office, his palms were sweaty and he was close to walking back out.

Then, as he went in through the back and sat in his chair he was surprised when the assistant asked “How are you feeling today Tom?”

“I’m fine.”

“Well, I just want you to know I want your visit to be comfortable today. So if you are feeling nervous, that is ok, I am here to answer your questions and if you feel pain or discomfort I want you to let me know, ok?”

Tom’s jaw relaxed and he continued his session. He concentrated on his breath and was surprised to notice that the doctor was really paying attention to him and listening.

This is not bad at all..

Building trust one visit at a time

Tom continued to visit us over the years and started to open up to us at the office.

One day, he shared his story with me and how his relationship to coming to the dentist was completely changed in our office.

He remembered how he felt that first time, and let me know that each time, he arrived to our office more and more relaxed, knowing that our team knows him and would take care of him with gentleness.

At our office, we believe personalized care matters. We take time to listen and notice our patients’ body language. We explain what we see. We move at a pace that respects each patient’s comfort level.

We know trust isn’t built in a single appointment.
It’s built over time, through presence, honesty, and care.

Why dental anxiety deserves compassion

Dental anxiety is not something to dismiss or minimize. It often carries emotional weight tied to vulnerability, control, and past experiences.

That is why our approach is gentle, patient-centered, and grounded in respect. We believe that when patients feel emotionally safe, real healing can begin, not just in their smiles, but in their overall well-being.

Tom’s journey from fear to trust is a reflection of what happens when dentistry becomes human again.
